Nag panchami is one of the nature worshiping festivals celebrated in India. There are many mythological stories and folklore related to nag panchami festival.
Nag panchami is celebrated in a big way in Maharashtra and Karnataka states.
Nag (cobra) is worshiped on nag panchami day which is usually celebrated on the 4th and 5th day of Shravan (July/August) month of a Hindu calender. Nag- cobra is considered a friend of farmers as he protects the fields from the rats who destroy the produce in the fields.

Farmers do not plough their fields on this day so as not to hurt the snakes in the field. The householders do not use any cutting implements in a symbolic gesture. Cooking is done with methods such as steaming without using khives.
No deep frying is done on this day by those who celebrate the nag panchami festival. So mostly steamed food such as Rice rava
Sweet khandvi, dind, etc. is cooked on Nag panchami day.
Some items are prepared in advance such as puthani tambittu, chigli unde, Akki hittu tambittu
In Maharashtra Puranache Dind are prepared on Nagpanchami day, which is a steamed recipe and does not require any cutting/chopping etc.

Nagpanchami festival recipes
1) Puranache Dind
Puran Dind Nagpanchami festival Recipe
Dind is made with Whole wheat flour, chana dal and jaggery. Dind is a stuffed steamed kadabu where no cutting is required.

2) Roasted gram laddoo/puthani tambittu unde
Puthani tambittu unde is made with puthane, also known as daliya, hurigadale, pottukadale, roasted gram etc. The sweetener used in gud/jaggery.

3) Sweet Khandvi / Khantoli
Sweet khantoli – khandvi is made in Maharashtra on Nagpanchami day.
Khandvi – khantoli – sanjori is a nagpanchami festival sweet recipe.
Khantoli/sanjori is made with rice rava and takes about 15-20 minutes to make. The sweetener is jaggery/gud. You may also use sugar if your wish.

4) Chigli unde/ black sesame seed/ Til laddoo
Chigli unde is made for Ganesh chaturthi and Nag panchami festival in Karnataka. Made with black sesame seeds and jaggery/gud, it is very healthy. A good item for winter season too.

5) Coconut burfi – Narial burfi – kobbari mithai
Coconut burfi is a sweet made with freshly grated coconut. Very quick and easy, can be made at any festival time. It is a popular recipe for Raksha Bandhan. This made with coconut and sugar. You may make with gud/jaggery too, only the color will be different. It is usually flavored with cardamom powder. For richness of taste, milk, cream or khova/mava is added.

6) Besan laddoo/Chickpea flour sweet balls
Besan laddo is made with bengal gram dal flour / chickpea flour. A must for traditional festivals such as Diwali festival. A very popular Indian sweet, it is made all over India.
