What is Indian Raita – Raitha / Bharta

Indian Raita as well as Bharta is usually a vegetable or fruit with curd/yogurt/dahi. You may call it a yogurt based salad. It is served with a rice dish such as biryani, pulao, mixed veg rice etc. It is also served with flat breads such as roti, chapati, plain paratha, methi paratha, aloo paratha, palak paratha etc.

As raita/bharta is made using curd, it is cooling for body and alleviate the heat effects of a hot spicy curry that is served with the meal. This Indian Yogurt salad recipe is a side dish that is served with a variety of Indian rice or roti bread. Not only it is a very healthy recipe, but it is easy and simple and quick recipe too.

How to Make Onion Raita

Homemade curd dahi plain yogurt
  • Onion – 1 medium
  • Curds(plain yogurt) – 1 cup
  • Salt – to taste
  • Sugar – 1/4 tsp
  • Green chili (optional) – 1 chopped fine or slit in two.
  • Coriander(Cilantro) leaves – 1 tbsp

Ingredients for tempering

  • Oil – 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida – a pinch

Making raita

Preparation – 

  1. Chop fine – onions, cilantro
  2. Slit chili in half if you want to take it out before serving. Chop chili finely if you like raita chili hot

Prepare tempering – 

  1. Heat oil. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
  2. Add the slit chili, pinch of asafetida. Take off the stove and let cool.

Final Mixing

  1. Mix together chopped onions, cilantro leaves, salt, sugar, curds.
  2. Add the prepared tempering and mix well.
  3. Serve with rice or roti bread, paratha, naan immediately or after cooling in the fridge for sometime.

Tip:

You can add black pepper powder along with or instead of green chili according to your taste.

The plain yogurt(curds)should be fresh and sweet. Make sure it is not sour.

Add 1 tbsp fresh grated coconut to this raita if you wish.

Keep the raitha in the fridge if you are planning to serve it later. If left outside, it can get sour.

Raita tastes wonderful with all the rice dishes as well as roti breads.
