Stir fried Ratalu | Vrat Upvas Recipe
Ratalyacha kees or grated sweet potato stirfry is a Maharashtrian recipe of stir fried sweet potatoes. This is a upvas, vrat / fasting recipe.
It is a favorite of many, so it is made at other times too for breakfast or as a snack.
Sweet potatoes or ratalu / ratali cooks quickly so this is a good one for breakfast.

Ingredients for Ratlyacha kees – Sweet potato stir fry
Ingredients for Ratlyacha kees – Sweet potato stir fry for 2-3 servings
- Sweet potatoes / ratalu – 2 – 3 washed well
- Roasted peanut powder – 1/4 cup
- Cumin seed / jeera – 1/2 tsp
- Salt to taste
- Vegetable oil or desi ghee – 1 tbsp
- Green chilies, chopped or paste – 2-3 or more according to taste
Optional ingredients
- Cilantro / hara dhania – 1 tbsp chopped
- Fresh grated coconut – 1 or 2 tbsp
Step by step instructions for making – sweet potato stirfry – Ratalyacha kees

Wash and clean sweet potatoes.
Grate ratalu or sweet potato. You may use a large hole grater.
I used my food processor.
Heat oil in a thick bottom pan.

When oil is hot, add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
Add chopped green chilies or chili paste. Fry for a few seconds.
Add the grated sweet potato.
Mix well.

Add salt according to taste.
Mix well and cover with a lid.
Cook on low flame for 3-4 minutes.

Add powdered roasted peanuts and freshly grated coconut if adding.
Mix well.

Cook covered on low flame.
Check and stir after 2 minutes.
Sweet potato / ratalu should be cooked soft by this time.

Add chopped cilantro / hara dhania.
Mix and serve.

- Serve ratalyacha kees with a wedge of lime.
- You may serve it with a small bowl of fresh curd/yogurt.
If you are making for a vrat/upvas/ fasting day, You may add other suitable items such as Sabudana Khichdi, Sabudana Vada to the meal. You may have Rava sheera or Daliya sheera as a sweet/dessert.
